Information for family & friends

You can be a good support to someone that has experienced sexual violence if you:

  • Listen!

  • Dont push - allow them to remain in control of what they share with you and how.

  • Reassure them that you wont tell anyone else (unless a child is at risk of harm)

  • Be patient

  • Accept and dont judge

  • Learn about the effects of sexual violence and ways of coping with these.

  • Ask how you can help or be supportive.

  • Avoid feeling responsible or trying to fix things.

  • Avoid asking intrusive questions about the abuse.

  • Look after yourself too!
